And we’ve found ourselves a writer!

Good day everyone and welcome back to Firstgamedevelopment!

I’ve been busy talking to people who’ve emailed me, offering their help, all week long. And I’m still not done. The amount of people interested in helping has been totally overwhelming so far. Once more, I would like to thank everyone for contacting me.

Today, I’ve been studying. A lot. Why? Well, if you would just take a quick look to the right. You might have to scroll down a bit. If you are reading this today, you’ll see a big “1″. I have my first exam tomorrow and I haven’t been this nervous for a long, long time. When I got home from work, I started studying and even now, while I’m on a break, I can’t stop thinking about it!

I do try though. And I have a pretty good reason to. Why?

Because it is time to announce the next member of our development team! His name is Aaron and he’s from the UK. He’s a Software Engineer looking for experience in developing games. He’ll help us out with the plot, dialogue and grammar! He’s a very welcome addition to the team and I’m sure we’ll get along just fine! If you want to know more about Aaron, please visit the ”Development Team” page. It’s just the “People behind the game” page, but I decided to rename it.

Besides that, I’ve added some information to the FAQ page after receiving a question.

That’s it for today. I’ll keep you updated on any information concerning the game or my exam!

Thanks for reading!

Dave

Quick update!

Hello everyone and welcome back to Firstgamedevelopment!

I thought you’d might like an update on how things are going right now. Let me sum it all up.

  1. After starting some threads on numerous websites, asking people to join my development team, I received a lot of emails. I never really thought I would receive that many! So currently, I’m mostly talking to people, informing people and meeting people, which is great! Thanks everyone for contacting me! If you think you’d make a great addition to the team, please visit the “Become a developer TODAY!” page to find out more.
  2. Besides talking to people, not much has happend yet. We’re still planning on starting on the graphics, but so far we’ve been quite busy. They will be coming together soon though.
  3. I still haven’t thought of a good name for the development team yet. If you have a suggestion, please, do not hesitate to let me know!
  4. Oh, yesterday an idea for another game struck me. So I’m still figuring that one out. Nothing too serious so far, but I just like to think forward: I need to expand my (still empty) portfolio! I might start another blog on the side for that game, so keep an eye out!

That should pretty much cover it for today. As soon as there is more information available, you’ll be the first to know!

Thanks once more and I hope to see you all again soon!

Dave

Welcome our new graphic designer!

Good day everyone and welcome to another post on the firstgamedevelopment blog!

Today I am back with some very exciting news! I’ve gotten in contact with a couple of people who replied to my posts on sites all over the internet, in which I was asking for people to join my development team. And today, me and one of the first ones to reply on one of my posts, Daan Wesselius, decided that he will join the development team!

I hereby would very much like to welcome Daan to the team!

The funny thing about Daan is that he happens to be Dutch, just like me, and actually lives just about 20 minutes away!

Having all this said, some information about Daan will be added to the “People behind the game” page. Besides Daan’s, I’ve receive other emails of people who would like to join the team, some of them being programmers, some of them being graphic designers. I’m still talking with some of them and I can barely wait to welcome more people to the team!

Me and Daan will start working on the first graphics of the game soon. We decided to go with an isometric pixel art style. We will surely post examples of our work when we finish some of it, so keep an eye out!

Before I forget: I’m still looking for a good name for our development team. Do you have a suggestion? Don’t hesitate to let me know! You can comment on this post or send your suggestion to firstgamedevelopment@gmail.com

Having all this said, I would like to thank everyone who sent me an email! If YOU are interested in joining me and Daan in the development team, please visit the “Become a developer TODAY!” page for more information on the subject.

Thank you all for reading and I hope to welcome you back to the firstgamedevelopment blog soon!

Game development team

Hello everyone and welcome back to firstgamedevelopment!

This post will be a short one for a change! I’ll just give you a brief description on what’s up at the moment. I have a feeling this won’t be my best post yet, but you know. We’ll see.

Today, I started posting on multiple forums, looking for people to join my development team. I’m still looking for more forums and sites to post on, so if you know any, let me know!

Besides that, I’ve started working on the first graphics and so far, I’m pretty content with my work. I’ll post some examples as soon as I finish making them!

I also started thinking about the name of the development team I’m looking to create. Do you guys have any ideas on a name?

If you are interested in helping me out, by helping me write the story, create graphics, write music or anything related? Please visit the “Become a developer TODAY!” page!

That is pretty much it. Not much more going on at the moment! More information coming soon!

Thanks for reading and I hope you’ll have a wonderful day!

Announcing the game title

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog!

I am here today with some great news: I will be announcing the title of the game I’ve been telling you about!

But before I get to that, I would like to talk about my general vision on the future of this imaginary world I’m working on (which does not have a name as of yet now that I think of it). I’m not just writing all this story and content for only one game. So far I believe I’ve written about 10 pages of storyline, without even a single word of dialogue included. Besides the plot and characters, I’ve started working on some graphics that might be included in the game. I’m still trying to figure out what I want exactly, but I feel like I’m getting somewhere. As soon as I finish something worth showing you, I will.

The idea is to make this imaginary world a base for many things. Some things might be a bit too ambitious, but worth mentioning nonetheless. Some of my ideas include:

  1. Creating a game.
Obviously. This will be the game you’ve been reading about on this blog. As you might have read, the game is in full development and more details and information will be coming out regularly.
  2. Creating a trilogy.
This is the somewhat bigger picture. It would be awesome to make this game the first part to a series.
  3. Creating an online game.
Currently, this might be a bit too ambitious. But it surely is something I’m considering doing eventually.
  4. Creating merchandise
Posters, T-Shirts, Stickers, you know. I’m absolutely not doing all this for the cash, but just the thought of having your own merchandise is awesome. However, this is something that’s not happening soon.

And these 4 things are just a couple of things that are on my mind. There is more. A lot more. I just thought you’d might like a general idea of where this is going.

I feel like it is time to announce the title of the first game. And this is exactly what I’ll do.

The game will be called “Road to Recuperation” (or RtR for short). The name of the game came to be when I wrote the idea for the Recuperation Council (See the page “Game Plot” for more information). I thought it fitted nicely with the main goal of the game and I hope you do too!

I would like to end this post by also announcing another page that I’ll add to the blog today, called “Become a developer today!”, where I will post the things you’ll need to do to become co-developer of the game. From now on, I’ll no longer ask you for your help in every post, but instead, refer you to the “Become a developer today!” page.

Having all this said, I hope you’ll have a fantastic Wednesday and I hope to welcome you back later!

Dave

Full plot of the game: IT IS HERE!

Good day to anyone reading this and welcome (back) to my blog!

In my last post I continued on the description of the main plot of the game. Today, I’m back to finish the job. Like I said in my previous post, the description will hopefully be a 3-parter and I’ll do what it takes to make it happen. Without further ado, I present to you: The full description of the plot!

“Many years ago, when the kingdom of Alicanto was founded, life was good. War was something the world hadn’t experienced yet and wealth and love were considered self-evident. Avarius Maxus, proud king of Alicanto made sure everyone was satisfied. He did all he could to make the people happy and did a decent job. After many years of hard work, Avarius Maxus died peacefully. His son, Avarius the 2nd, was to be the new king. There was something different about Avarius the 2nd. He didn’t just take care of just the Alicantonese, but also made sure all adjecent kingdoms were living life to the fullest and offered all the help needed for them to do so. The economy reached a level never even dreamed of before and Alicanto became known as one of the most important kingdoms in the history of the world, led by one of the best kings the world had ever seen. But things came to a halt.

When king Avarius the 2nd died unexpectedly, his son was the only one who was able to become king. Avarius the 2nd never wanted his son to become king, but there was no other option. With his son, Avarius the 3rd, leading Alicanto, things turned real ugly, real quick. Avarius the 3rd wasn’t the man his father and his grandfather were.

The era in which Alicanto was known for it’s powerful economy and thriving population came to an end. In an effort to gain an even higher marketposition, Avarius the 3rd started gathering men, an army, to fight for his cause. The other kingdoms quickly became aware of this since Alicanto never really had much of an army; the Alicantonese were peaceful and caring people, who didn’t have any reason to fight or even defend themselves. As the army grew, other kingdoms started asking questions. Why did Alicanto suddenly need an army? The contact between Avarius the 3rd and the rulers of the other kingdoms became hostile because of the way Avarius was, talked and behaved.

When the army got to the size Avarius wanted, he did something no one ever imagined, not even when Alicanto started gathering an army in the first place. Avarius initiated an all out attack on Theraphosa, one of the adjecent kingdoms that was on a higher marketposition. However, the war did not last long. The Alicantonese army was no match for the Theraphosian army. Therphosa was a much bigger, stronger and wealthier kingdom than Alicanto was and would ever be. The Alicantonese army hardly crossed the border when they got overrun by Theraphosian troops. The army was completely wiped out and Theraphosa conquered a small part of Alicanto, which is now known as “Old Alicanto”. Then Theraphosa went for Avarius the 3rd.

The Theraphosian army reached Previlla, the main capital of Alicanto. The city was destroyed and the army went for the Royal palace, which was stationed in Previlla. Once the army reached the Royal palace, the Royal Guard was slaughtered, the Royal palace was destroyed and Avarius the 3rd was captured. The Theraphosians then left, leaving Preville broken and Alicanto trembling. In the meanwhile, serveral political parties were founded to lead Alicanto until a new king was chosen. A few days later, news arrived that Avarius the 3rd had been tortured and murdered by Theraphosian soldiers and Theraphosa agreed to make peace. Although peace was made, the contact between Alicanto and all the other kingdoms remained hostile. A new king had to be chosen. The new king who had to be up to the task to restore Alicanto and the contact with Theraphosa was found in the person of King Grivux the 1st. Grivux started making plans immediately and came up with a project known as the “Recuperation Project”. The goal of the project was to pick the best entrepeneurs possible and get them to start new companies. The companies were to make a lot of money and pay for the expenses of the repair of Preville and to restore the once strong economy.

You start out as the assistent of one of these entrepeneurs. Do you have what it takes to restore Alicanto to its former glory?”

Phew. There it is. The full description of the plot. I hope you enjoy the story so far and I hope it makes you excited for the rest that’s coming. I will add a page to the blog called: “Game Plot”, where the story you just read will be posted.

I would like to end this post the same way I did the last ones. I would really like to receive any feedback you can give me, it makes the blog and game better eventually! Besides that, I’m open for any suggestions on the game or the blog and everything will be taken into consideration.

I’m also still looking for help on the game. If there is anyone out there that’s willing to help me by:
- Checking my grammar
- Co-writing the story / dialogue
- Making art / graphics for the game

Then I would really appreciate that. The game will be a big project and I need all the help I can get! If you think you’re up to the task, you can always contact me at firstgamedevelopment@gmail.com

For now, thanks for reading and I hope to welcome you back with my next post!

Description of the plot: Part 2

Good day everyone!

Once again I would like to thank you for visiting my blog, whether this is your first visit or not!

In my last post I started on a brief desciption of my game. Sure, it wasn’t finished yet, but you know.. it was a start. A start of a new journey for me, one could say. Today I would like to continue writing the description, eventhough I don’t know if it’ll be finished after this post as of now. We’ll see.

Before I get into the description once again, I would like to tell you about a new page I will be adding to the blog today, which will be called FAQ (or Frequently Asked Questions as you might know). I’m adding this page to the blog because I received an email from a reader asking me a couple of questions about things that aren’t really clear yet. (I will not use the name of anyone who sends me an email because of their privacy. I will, however, use their name if they agree on me doing so.) I would like to use the FAQ-page to answer questions I receive by mail. Obviously.

There are, however, certain things that I cannot tell you about, because I simply cannot answer them yet. As the blog and the game develope, the questions will be answered. I will try and answer all of your questions about me, the blog and/or the game. If you would like to see what questions were asked and what my response was, check out the new FAQ-page where I posted a short version of the questions and answers.

Right. I feel it is time to continue with the description of the backgroundstory. I will also post part 1 of the description again, so it’ll all be easier to read and understand. Here we go!

PART 1

“Many years ago, when the kingdom of Alicanto was founded, life was good. War was something the world hadn’t experienced yet and wealth and love were considered self-evident. END OF PART 2

Nope, it’s still not done yet! And this is just a small desciption of the main plot! I think the description will end up to be a 3-parter, so you will have to be patient if you want to read the whole description!

Once again, I would like to ask you for your feedback. I really enjoy writing these posts and I love working on the game itself, but as long as no one tells me I’m doing something wrong, I will continue working this way. So if there is anything you would like to see done differently, please, let me know!

Besides that, I’m also still open to any suggestions you might have. Everything is taken into consideration. The story is not final yet, or even close to done, so there is plenty of room for your additional story or changes!

I’m also still looking for someone who would like to help me out by checking my grammar. If you think you are up for the task and would like to see your credits as well as a custom character in the game, please let me know. Graphic designers and storywriters are also more than welcome! You can always contact me at firstgamedevelopment@gmail.com

For now, I hope you’ll have an amazing sunday and I hope to welcome you back with my next post!

Start of our journey

Good day everyone!

I’d like to thank you for taking the time to visit my blog, and, if you’ve been here before, welcome you back!

I have been thinking about what to write in this post all day long. Ideas came and went. And even after all the thinking I did, just on what to write in my first post, (or at least, my first post that actually relates to the game), I’m not sure how this post will end up. Why? I’ll try to explain.

Personally, I find it very exciting to finally be able to say that I’m actually working on a videogame, something that has been on my mind for such a long time. So far, I believe I have come up with 7 or 8 different game concepts, but none of them turned out to be exactly what I wanted. Something about this concept however, is different. Atleast, it is to me. I’m really serious about this and I feel like I don’t want to underachieve. This causes a lot of hesitation, doubt even. I’m sure all of you have been in a situation where you really, REALLY wanted something to work out for you but nothing you did felt like it was good enough. Or maybe I’m just a perfectionist. People might say that, when you’re doing something you’ve never done before, your first attempt will never be what you want it to be. But I want to do everything it takes to, atleast, make it a close call.

This is pretty much the reason why I still don’t know whether I should delete the whole paragraph I just wrote or not. We’ll see what works. We’ll make it work, I promise.

So far, nothing relevant to the game has been said. Yet. But the time has come.
However, before I start talking about the actual game, there is this I would like to say. I do like to keep things.. You know, interesting. This means that I will not be posting every word I add to the story to this blog. You wouldn’t have a reason to play the game if I did. I find this very important, especially since my intentions are to create a game that everyone can picture their own way. I will also divide the stuff I want you to read over multiple posts.

Today, I would like to give you a small part of a brief description I wrote for the backgroundstory of the game. I will, however, not reveal the actual name of the game, yet! I don’t want to spoil too much in my first post. The backgroundstory is something I’m still changing daily, so things might be altered later on, things might be deleted and things might be added. But the good thing about a blog is that I will be able to inform you so. Besides all that, the names I might use are not final by any means.

Here goes!

PART 1

“Many years ago, when the kingdom of Alicanto was founded, life was good. War was something the world hadn’t experienced yet and wealth and love were considered self-evident. Avarius Maxus, proud king of Alicanto made sure everyone was satisfied. He did all he could to make the people happy and did a decent job. END OF PART 1

This is all there is for today. The story isn’t finished yet and there is still a lot that I’m saving now for future posts. This isn’t even the full description of the backgroundstory yet, this is just a small part of it! I really do hope you find it interesting to atleast some degree so far.

I would like to use the oppertunity to give a word of thanks to the people who have liked my first post and are following my blog already. THANKS! I really do appreciate it.

I also would like to ask you for your opinion on my general writing, my grammar and most importantly, my story so far. I would very much appreciate your feedback, although I do prefer constructive critisism over bashing.

Besides that, I would like to let you know that I’m open to ANY suggestion. If there are parts in the short story so far you would like to see changed, let me know! Every suggestion will be considered. The same goes for any additions to the story, name changes, etc. etc. You can always contact me by sending a email to firstgamedevelopment@gmail.com. Oh, and if you are willing to help out with the game by checking my grammar, let me know and we’ll work something out! I really do need help with that!

For now, I would like to thank you for reading and I hope to be able to welcome you back on this blog with the next post soon!

Dave

Introduction to this blog!

Hello and welcome to my blog; Firstgamedevelopment!

In this first post, I will tell you all about this blog, the idea behind it and the guy writing it. This post can also be found on the “About this blog” page.

My name is Dave, I’m from a small country called The Netherlands and I will be the one writing all these posts about something I’m very passionate about. I hope to make you as interested in it as I am myself. Let me explain what this is all about.

Currently, I’m learning how to program in C and C++ through a course, which I hope to complete sometime around the summer of 2013. I have been studying for a month and a half and I’ve completed 1/3 of the course, which SHOULD take 4 months to complete. The whole course should take 15 months, but I hope to graduate in 3 to 4 months, after which I will start taking another course. Not because I’m all that smart, but because I want to program stuff for a living and I find it hard to put down the books! So I spend most of my time studying.

I have been a dedicated gamer for the most part of my life and one of things I’ve always wanted to do is making a game of my own. And that’s what this blog is about!

Besides studying, I recently started working on the backgroundstory of a “textbased” game. Don’t worry if you don’t like textbased games, don’t click away just yet! Why? Because I’m not planning on making it 100% textbased! More like.. 80% textbased. I want the gameplay to be textbased, but I also want to combine it with pictures, animations, music and other stuff found in non-textbased games. And I want them to be custom made. I’m not really sure on how to do all this, but I’m working on it as we speak! I just know that I want to create a template for a world. A world of which 80% is created in the imagination of the player.

Now, why the blog? I would like to use this blog to keep you updated on my progress, mainly on the progress of my game, which I will be programming as soon as I finish the course. Besides updates, I will publish parts of the story, information, pictures, animations and pretty much everything else there is about the game. By doing so, I hope to entertain people with my writing and make people interested in my game, which WILL be downloadable FOR FREE when it is finished. I intend to update this blog regularly, this could be daily, maybe weekly, it all depends on my progress.

But it’s not just that. I also need YOUR help! I would like to find people that would like to help me make the game, by helping me out with things like:
- Checking and correcting my (terrible) English. Sorry, I’m trying!
- Writing parts of the storyline
- Designing character biographies
- Drawing out pictures, backgrounds, sprites etc.
- Testing the game
- Etc.

I will tell you more about these things as the blog progresses. All I can say so far is that, besides the obvious credits you will receive, I’m planning to create a character with the names (might be slightly altered, but it’ll be obvious enough) of the people helping me and thus making them part of the actual game!

This is all on the blog, for now at least. If you have any questions or want to contact me, you can always contact me by mailing to firstgamedevelopment@gmail.com.

For now, I want to thank you all for reading and I hope you’ll enjoy my blog!

Dave
